“We preach Christ crucified”
1 Corinthians 1:23

Seven Reasons
Why Christians Don’t Have a Sinful Nature

  • First and foremost, God says so.  There are a dozen Scriptures in the New Testament that testify to this divine truth (see the Bible References Section of our website).  The Bible is clear that when we were born again, our old sinful nature died.  A number of Scriptures also make it clear that our sinful nature not only died, it was removed from us (Romans 6:6; 8:9; Colossians 2:11).
  • God only creates what is good.  When God created man, it was good.  When God created the new man in Christ, it was good.  God would never create a new man who still has an evil sinful nature living in him (2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 7:21).
  • God has made us into a new creation, the body of Christ.  God would never allow Christ’s body, the temple of the Spirit, to be inhabited by an evil sinful nature (1 Corinthians 3:16-17; Romans 7:21).  Before God could make His new creation, He had to first deal with the old creation.  Therefore, God not only dealt with its fruit (our sinful actions); He also removed its very root (our sinful nature).  Whoever has a sinful nature is a child of the devil (John 8:44).  That is why our sinful nature had to be destroyed and removed before the Holy Spirit could inhabit us (Romans 6:6; Colossians 2:11).
  • God would never mix the holy with the unholy by putting His Holy Spirit into someone with a sinful nature (2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1).  That is why He always puts His Holy Spirit into a new wineskin (His new creation) and not an old wineskin (the old man of sin) in order to preserve both the work of the Holy Spirit and His new creation (John 9:17).  God would never join us together in spiritual union with Christ if our body still contained a sinful nature.  That would be spiritual harlotry and defile both our spirit and our body (1 Corinthians 6:15-17; Romans 7:21).
  • God would never create a new man who has a split personality of good and evil (Matthew 6:22-24).  That would cause you to have a divided mind and a divided heart.  Anyone divided against himself in this manner would not be able to spiritually stand against Satan’s attacks (Mark 3:25)
  • God would never allow the devil to have a spiritual foothold in His new creation (1 John 4:4; 5:18).  If God had allowed our sinful nature to still remain in us, He would have provided Satan with a spiritual connection and control in us.  It is no wonder that any Christian who believes he still has a sinful old nature thinks the devil has a strong hold over him in his struggle against sin.
  • Finally and most important, Jesus did not have a sinful nature.  He was born with a human body and He had a human soul (his will, intellect and emotions).  However, since He was born of a virgin and God was His Father, He did not inherit Adam’s sinful spiritual nature like we did.  This is why He was able to obey God and live a sinless life.  Now that we also are born of God and we no longer have a sinful nature, we too are capable of obeying God and not practicing sin.  Thus Jesus is our divine example and the first born of many brethren (Colossians 1:15; 1 John 3:9).

Endnote:  It is essential to know that your sinful nature was destroyed and removed from you when you were born again of the Spirit; otherwise you cannot overcome sin and the devil if you do not believe you have been delivered from the power of sin.  “Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin (our sinful nature) might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin (Romans 6:6-7).”
